Hendra Eka was born and grew up in East Java, Indonesia.
Since 2009 he is a photographer based in Jakarta, Indonesia. During his career, Hendra covered many events in Asia-Pacific, Australia, Europe, and US.
Hendra particularly enjoys challenging people’s perceptions with fresh ideas. He has always tried to push himself out of his comfort zone by seeking new challenges and experiences. Now he is the Secretary General of Pewarta Foto Indonesia (PFI), the highest organization for photojournalist in Indonesia.
On top of shooting general news and sports for the newspaper, he has also covered the AirAsia QZ8501 disaster in 2015, Indonesian election, and Conflict at Wamena, Papua in 2019.
A versatile shooter who enjoys his news and sports coverage, Hendra also dabbles in the use of multimedia in his story-telling which takes the form of photo essays published both in print and online.
In 2020 he selected as the recipient of the Permata Photojournalist Grant Fellowship to Amsterdam, Netherland. The most prestigious grant in Indonesia for young photojournalists to create a photo story project under the guidance of Noor photographer, Kadir Van Lohuizen.
